TTT3 – Should Pilots Learn Jiu Jitsu
I wanted to chat with you about an article by Joshua Scovalend about jiujitsu as a method for police reform. I am going to approach this from the aviation venacular. This is something that we can really consider in the aviation world, and we should be better prepared to handle situations where someone is a danger to ourselves, our crews, or our passengers. It would be a great service to learn how to nonlethally subdue another person.
If you are a pilot, I highly recommend getting into jiujisu to prepare yourself for situations where you will need to protect yourself or others.

This episode of TTT is Adam’s personal opinions on the industry. A lot of our friends are facing furlow, and it’s really rough for young airline pilots who have not been with their company for a long time.
I want to point out that we should be taking care of our fellow aviators. This is a quick reminder to reach out to your friends who might not be doing so well. Just a conversation and connection coul be really meaningful to someone who is struggling, and it could be a chance to network and help each other.
The reality is that the future is clear at this point, and it might look grim for some people. Your friends might need some cheering up, especially your friends who fly airplanes or who used to be in the military.

Marc Himelhock is an ex viper driver and current major airline pilot, and he is the author of Cockpit2Cockpit, a book that teaches former military pilots how to get hired by commercial airlines. Marc is returning to the podcast to talk about things pilots (whether you are new to the industry or a seasoned professional) can respond to the changes in the aviation industry resulted from COVID-19.
If you haven’t been preparing for an industry downturn, you are behind the power curve, but it’s better late than never to start preparing for more challenging times in the industry.
- Start a budget and learn to live within your means
- Pilots and flight attendents are hourly employees, so our income fluctuates based on how much we work
- If you think you are facing furlow, consider storing cash instead of putting money into less liquid things like 401ks.
Listen for practical tips like this, and reasons to be optimistic about the future of the aviation industry.
In This Episode
2:17 – Things that you can do to prepare yourself for the next 5 years in the aviation industry
5:15 – What is a line guarantee?
7:44 – What you need to do now that the “bad times” have actually arrived
9:38 – A reason to be optimistic about the airline industry right now
11:04 – Things pilots should be doing right now if they are concerned about a furlow

This time, we have decided to go north of the border and talk to Mike Bourget from ACM Warbirds of Canada. Mike runs the show at ACM Warbirds, and he has a unique backstory. He didn’t start out as a professional pilot, but he can fly circles around most of us.
ACM Warbirds started out as a museum where people can experience fighter jets that don’t normally see them and it became an entertainment company. Mike went through aircrew selection for the Canadian military and was not selected, so he went into banking and entrepreneurship as a mortgage broker. After the death of his parents he decided to start flying. He started out as an air traffic controller, and his first day on the job was 9/11. Mike is still working in the ATC business, in charge of different operational systems around the country.
ACM is completely volunteer-run. All of the staff is there to have fun and educate the public. They go beyond airplane rides. They are a full entertainment company that does a variety of really fun things such as making a martini in the back of a jet upside down at 5,000 feet!
Join us for this inspirational episode about how Mike followed his dreams and created a unique career for himself in aviation.
